Police use GPS tracking to find stolen vehicles

By Staff Report

An in-car GPS tracking device helped police find two vehicles stolen Sunday night in Shawnee.

Capt. Bill Hisle said a couple had returned home from taking their new truck to the car wash about 11 p.m. Sunday in the 7200 block of Mullen Road. They were wiping the car down when they were approached by two males who had gotten out of a white sedan.

The taller man pulled out a gun and demanded keys to both the truck and a Chevy Tahoe parked in the garage. The thieves drove off with the cars, but the couple called police, who contacted the GPS service to track down the cars. The service located the cars at 12:15 a.m. at a Kansas City, Mo., apartment complex in the 9300 block of Bales Road.

Hisle said the two stolen vehicles were parked side by side, but police were unable to locate the suspects or the white sedan.
