Police Warn Of Home Alarm Scams

When protecting your home, you automatically think of locking your door or installing a home alarm system, but Texas law enforcement officials have a warning for you.

Police officials are investigating home alarm system scams. If the alarm salesperson knocking on your door does not have a security pocket card it's hard to tell who you're dealing with. Todd Roberts with Protech home systems told KFOX it’s important to know who you are working with.

"All of our employees and technicians or anyone who would go into someone's house have to be licensed they go through an FBI check,” said Roberts. “They are licensed through the Texas Department of Public Safety."

After all a person with a background check will most likely be trustworthy since they are dealing with sensitive information.

Roberts said you should never feel rushed.

"It should be a process. It should be an interview. It should not be you have to sign this contract right now.”

Also, watch out for salespersons misrepresenting themselves as being affiliated with Protech or other big- name home alarm companies.

"They will use the sales approach that it is an upgrade,” Roberts said. 'Oh we are going to upgrade your system,' but at the same time they just really want you to sign a new contract for 3 to 5 years."

Robert says in the end you still be obligated to pay two contracts and in many cases if they install the so called "upgrades" the equipment is less than what you originally had.

Before signing a contract, always make sure they are licensed by DPS and research the company.
